Sequoyah Memorial to Hold First Ever Breast Cancer Walk and Luncheon

Are you ready for October and Breast Cancer Awareness? Sequoyah Memorial is! Your local hospital is gearing up for the first ever SMH Awareness Walk. The walk will be held on Saturday, October 4, with registration beginning at 10 am, and the walk beginning at 10:30 am. Registration will be held at the SMH Professional Building just south of the hospital on Redwood. The first 50 to register will receive a free t-shirt, and also a ticket to attend the SMH Awareness Luncheon, funded by a grant from Susan G. Komen® Tulsa. The luncheon will be held at 11:30, after the walk ends. It will also be held at the SMH Professional Building.

The purpose of the walk and luncheon is to create awareness for breast cancer within the community. “Sequoyah Memorial is proud to offer preventive and diagnostic screening tools for breast cancer to our patients,” said Beth Fair, Director of Medical Imaging. “It is imperative that every woman begin having mammograms at the appropriate age. We consider it a great privilege to sponsor an event such as this to raise awareness about this disease, but also about the local medical options available to our community.”

Walkers will be able to sport their pink colors as they parade through downtown Sallisaw, creating a presence and awareness for breast cancer. “Each walker will be provided a sign that they will be able to carry, if they wish, as they walk to show support for fighting this disease,” said Holly Bormann, Director of Public Relations. “The walkers can pick from three signs- signs that say “Fighter”, for a person currently fighting breast cancer, “Survivor” for a person who is a cancer survivor, and “Walking For ___________” with the opportunity to fill in a person’s name. This person can be someone they know who is currently fighting the disease, or perhaps someone dear to them who has been lost to breast cancer. It’s really up to the walker who they would like to dedicate their walk to.”

The Awareness Luncheon is expected to be an exciting component of the day’s events. The luncheon is funded by a grant from Susan G. Komen® Tulsa. “We are so excited to welcome Sheila Taber, D.O, Radiologist Diagnostic Imaging Associates, as one of our guest speakers,” said Fair. “Dr. Taber will be speaking on the importance of prevention and having an annual mammogram. We will also hear from Jackie McKenzie RT, Tele-Mammography Coordinator with Diagnostic Imaging Associates. Jackie is also an eight year Breast Cancer Survivor. We are very fortunate to have the support of such gifted clinicians.”

Attendees will also have the opportunity to hear from Jennifer Scoufos, DO, a local physician and member of the SMH Medical Staff. “Dr. Scoufos will address local resources available to patients for screening and preventive tests. She is a great asset to our physician team and I know the women will enjoy hearing from her,” said Bormann. Attendees will be able to enjoy a free lunch, desserts, snacks, and also get free information about breast cancer. For more information, please call 918.774.1100.
